Why OU softball is more prepared for Alabama this time around in NCAA super regionals
OU softball faces Alabama in a super regional this weekend. The Sooners lost two of three to the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa a little more than a month ago. Coach Patty Gasso says her team is better now than it was then. The best-of-three super regional begins at 4 p.m. Friday at Love’s Field in Oklahoma City.. The game will be the first of three in the super regional, with the other two set for Saturday and Sunday. The winner will face either Florida or South Carolina in the next round of the NCAA tournament. and the other team will face off against either Texas or Texas A&M in the quarterfinals. and. the semi-finals in the finals in the final on May 25. and 26. and 27. and 28. and 29. and 30. and 31. and 32. and 33. and 34. and 35. and 36. and 37. and 38. and 39. and 40. and 41.
But heading into this weekend’s super regional against Alabama at Love’s Field, Sooners coach Patty Gasso said her team isn’t the same now as it was then.
“Much, much better,” Gasso said Wednesday. “I think that we used that weekend to learn a lot and take away from that ways to be better. We have executed that. They responded really well afterwards. We’ve been on a roll since. I think we’re playing our best softball right now.”
The best-of-three super regional begins at 4 p.m. Friday. Saturday’s game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Since that series loss in Tuscaloosa, OU is 12-2.

“Just not making the moment too big and not making the game bigger than it is,” redshirt freshman Nelly McEnroe-Marinas, the Sooners’ captain, said of the reason behind the transformation. “I feel like we’ve grown a lot in that way, and then just trusting what we’ve been doing and the work we’ve been putting in.”
One of the biggest differences since the first series against the Crimson Tide has been the success of Ella Parker at the plate.
Parker was mired in an extended slump during that series, going just 2 for 10 in Tuscaloosa, with her only hits being singles.
But the final game of that series, a 2-1 eight-inning loss, marked the start of Parker’s turnaround.
OU’s sophomore designated player started that game 0 for 2 before finishing the game with a pair of hits.
Beginning with those last two at-bats, Parker has gone 24 for 48 with a .958 slugging percentage.
She’s hit six of her 12 home runs during that span.
Sydney Barker has also emerged as a consistent bat in the lineup after seeing sparse playing time much fo the year.
During her current five-game hitting streak, the freshman is 7 for 14 with six runs and four RBIs.
Gasso also feels better about her pitching staff now.
Freshman Audrey Lowry was still battling back from an injury during that series and made just one three-inning appearance.
REQUIRED READING: How OU softball freshman Sydney Barker carved out utility role for Sooners in postseason
But after a few rocky outings as she’s worked her way back, Lowry has thrown 6 ⅓ scoreless innings over her last four appearances.
Though the Sooners are different now than they were when they first squared off against the Crimson Tide, so is Alabama.
The Crimson Tide haven’t been quite as hot since the first meeting, dropping series to both Florida and South Carolina and falling to the Gamecocks again in the SEC Tournament.
“I’ve known Pat Murphy for quite awhile — a long, long time actually. And he is really, really good at getting his team ready,” Gasso said. “And they’re fast. They’re aggressive. They have a good staff and he mixes them up really good, so you’ve gotta be ready to flip your script quickly as to who he brings in. They challenge you. …
“He is the master of motivation and getting his teams ready to be their best in this type of postseason setting.”
While Alabama wasn’t quite as dominant as the Sooners in their regional, beating Virginia Tech in a pair of one-run games to advance, Crimson Tide baserunners stole seven bases last weekend.
Alabama is averaging 1.85 stolen bases per game and Crimson Tide baserunners have only been thrown out 17 times this season. Among major-conference teams, only Oregon has more stolen bases per game than Bama.
“They challenge you on the basepaths,” Gasso said. “If you bobble, they’re gonna score. If you do anything bad and it’s not clean, they will make you pay for it.”

Alabama softball, Oklahoma set for another postseason clash in NCAA super regionals
Alabama softball is back in NCAA super regionals for the third-straight year and the 19th time in program history. The No. 15 Crimson Tide will face the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners in Oklahoma City. The two programs have met 17 times since 2006, with eight of those meetings coming in the Women’s College World Series. They have faced off once in the Super Regionals, when Alabama won the 2015 Tuscaloosa Super Regional 2-1 to advance to Oklahoma City to play in the next round. The teams most recently met in a conference series in April in what is Oklahoma’s first season in the Southeastern Conference. The Crimson Tide went on to win the best-of-three series 2-2. The series began in 2006, but their postseason rivalry began in dramatic fashion six years later in the 2012 Women’s College World series, when Oklahoma took the opener 4-1 but Alabama responded with back-to-back wins 8-6 and 5-4 to capture the title.
This time, the No. 15 Crimson Tide will face a familiar postseason foe — the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners.
The two programs have met 17 times since 2006, with eight of those meetings coming in the Women’s College World Series, including Alabama’s 2012 national championship victory. They have faced off once in the Super Regionals, when Alabama won the 2015 Tuscaloosa Super Regional 2-1 to advance to Oklahoma City.
The teams most recently met in a conference series in April in what is Oklahoma’s first season in the Southeastern Conference. At the time, Oklahoma was ranked No. 2 and Alabama No. 22. The Crimson Tide went on to win the best-of-three series 2-1.
After dropping the series opener — blowing a 1-0 lead by allowing five runs in the seventh inning — Alabama bounced back with a 6-1 win in Game 2, handing the Sooners their then-largest margin of defeat at that point in the season. The Crimson Tide clinched the series the next day, when Audrey Vandagriff hit a walk-off home run in the eighth inning to secure a 2-1 victory.

Now, they’ll meet again — with a trip to Oklahoma City on the line.
Alabama advanced by sweeping the Tuscaloosa Regional wins over Jackson State (8-0, 5 innings) and Virginia Tech (4-3, 3-2) to punch its ticket to super regionals. Oklahoma, meanwhile, swept the Normal Regional with wins over three run-rule wins over Boston University (8-0) and Call (11-2, 12-1). The Sooners are the four-time defending national champions.
Alabama heads into Norman as the underdog, but it is nothing new.
Just last year, then-No. 14 Alabama headed to the Knoxville Super Regional to face No. 3 Tennessee. After dropping the opener, 3-2, the Crimson Tide evened the series with a 14-inning, 3-2 win, then clinched the series with a 4-1 victory to secure a return trip to Oklahoma City.
Here’s a look back at Alabama’s most recent match-up vs. Oklahoma and a glance at its history with the Sooners.
A look back at Alabama softball’s 2025 series vs Oklahoma
In Game 1, Alabama’s offense struggled. It managed three hits — two from Kali Heivilin and one from Vandagriff — and failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities, including leaving the bases loaded in the first inning. Starter Catelyn Riley held Oklahoma scoreless on three hits through five innings, but the Sooners broke through for five runs in the seventh to steal a 5-1 win.
In Game 2, Alabama seemed to find a rhythm.
Jocelyn Briski had what coach Patrick Murphy called her “best game of the year against a very good hitting team,” at the time. She pitched the complete-game, holding Oklahoma — then ranked second in the NCAA in runs scored per game (8.42) heading into the series — to two hits, one run and a solo homer in the seventh inning.
The offense was more aggressive and productive, collecting seven hits — including home runs from Heivilin and Abby Duchscherer. The Tide played clean defense and didn’t commit an error in the 6-1 victory.
Alabama continued with its rhythm in the rubber match. Riley pitched the complete game, retiring the first 12 Sooners she faced before she gave up a hit. Alabama out hit Oklahoma, 7-6, behind Vandagriff’s three hits. Alabama’s defense gave up one error, but was clutch as it forced a pair of force outs in the seventh inning after the Sooners loaded the bases with one out.
Riley finished the series throwing 19.0 scoreless innings against Oklahoma — a critical factor in the series win.
