CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The first of three supermoons occurred back in October, but when does the next one make an appearance?

The last supermoon to be spotted in the sky was on October 6th. The Associated Press states that this supermoon was the first of three this year and happens when a full moon is closer to Earth in its orbit, at approximately 226,000 miles from Earth. This makes the moon appear 4% larger and 30% brighter than the faintest moon of the year, NASA stated.

USA Today states that the next full moon will be the November beaver supermoon, set to rise on November 5th with peak illumination at 8:19 a.m. It will rise around the same time for several nights, and the best time to watch will be Tuesday and Wednesday night.

NASA states that the full moon appears brighter and larger than a regular full moon, which is why it is called a supermoon. Supermoons are closer to the Earth than normal, hence the illusion that they appear larger and brighter.

The Farmer’s Almanac states that the November full moon marks the time when some of the first snow appears in the northern sphere of the United States and Canada, and when the fall foliage has passed. Signs of frost on the grass give beavers the sign to build their dams before the ground freezes, which is where the term beaver moon comes from. The beaver moon is a sign that winter is coming.
