Pride Month just got even brighter. Katseye’s Megan Meiyok Skiendiel publicly confirmed that she is bisexual during a live Weverse broadcast last Friday, making it the second public coming-out within the group following fellow member Lara Raj, who revealed that she’s queer earlier in March.

“Guys, I’m coming out, I’m bisexual,” Megan announced during the joint livestream with Raj. They immediately celebrated the moment, jumping up and down with joy in front of fans. “I’m like scared now,” she added and laughed again.

Megan first hinted at her bisexuality a month ago during a live chat. “Why is everyone asking if I’m –” then she subtly mouthed the word “bi” and nodded her head, later adding, “Yes, I am.”

Katseye is now one of the only K-pop groups with openly queer members. In Korea, coming out as LGBTQ is still a bold and risky decision, as it can be met with strong disapproval from fans, which can jeopardise one’s career. Only a handful of idols have ever made such a move; Holland, widely known as “the first openly gay K-pop idol”, came out during his debut as recently as 2018.

How did Katseye get famous?

Katseye is a multinational group under the Korean entertainment powerhouse Hybe and American label Geffen Records, formed in 2023 during the talent show The Debut: Dream Academy. Based in the US, the group has five other members: Lara (Indian-American), Daniela (Venezuelan/Cuban), Manon (Ghanaian and Swiss-Italian), Sophia (Filipina) and Yoonchae (Korean).

Katseye refers to the cat’s eye gemstone, which displays a range of colours depending on the direction of the light. The team leader, Sophia, said in an interview with InStyle that the group name represents the talents and different backgrounds of each member. “We are all very different girls with our own charms, personalities, [backgrounds] and what we represent,” she said.

Since the release of their debut single “Debut” last June, Katseye has become one of the world’s most popular girl groups, with over 3 million followers on Instagram at the time of writing.

The hit single “Touch” from their debut EP Soft Is Strong has been played around 300 million times on Spotify so far. The Netflix reality series Pop Star Academy: Katseye, released last August, also boosted their exposure. The group will return later this month with their second EP, Beautiful Chaos.

Megan’s coming out won the support of fans

One fan commented on X, “Megan feeling comfortable to come out as bisexual so casually on live makes me so happy for the girls”.

Other comments from fans under the post include, “We support her! Happy to them both!” and “Congratulations we love you Megan!”

She is half-Singaporean and has a mother who always encourages her

Megan, 19, has a Singaporean-Chinese mother and a Swedish-American father. She said in an interview with The Straits Times in 2024 that she enjoys local dishes such as laksa and Hainanese chicken rice, and stays in touch with her relatives daily through her family’s WhatsApp group chat.

“My mum took me to Singapore when I was about three months old,” she said. They still visit her grandmother every year. “Being an Asian mum, she practises tough love on her kids, but I love her for that.”

Megan started taking dance lessons and singing classes at four and six, respectively. In the second episode of Pop Star Academy: Katseye, she revealed that she flew back and forth between Honolulu and Los Angeles to attend dance class when she was younger.

In another episode, as her daughter prepares for the final stages of her audition, her mum cries as Megan comforts her. “My mum always pushes me to be the greatest version of myself, even though it’s hard sometimes. That is how she shows her love for me, and I love her so much for that,” she added.

Her signature hime cut

Megan stood out in the group for her signature hime cut, which is a long hairstyle that features short layers framing the face and sometimes a fringe. Her hair colours are also different in different sections.

Megan recalls her secret to maintaining the look in an interview with Teen Vogue. “I always have to get my hair – my bangs and the hime – cut, always making sure that it’s blunt. I always have to cut it to make sure it’s even.”

In a recent interview with Vogue, Megan said that the hairstyle she is most excited to try now is one of those short, angular bob, like a short pixie cut – like the one Monica from Friends wore.
