Why extreme heat means more business for some local companies
Spring Brook Ice and Fuel has been distributing ice and fuel in Connecticut since 1918. Company owner Greg Stafstrom: “I don’t think it’s anything that we haven”t experience year after year.” Company also sells dry ice and offers individual pickups. Companies that supply pool water, like Manchester-based Kleerwater Co., has also kept busy.
Each day, its facility distributes tens of thousands of bags of ice either picked up or delivered to grocery stores, liquor stores, fire departments and convenience stores.

“The heat that we’ve had since late June and early July certainly has spiked sales, you know, primarily because of the extreme heat,” owner Greg Stafstrom said. “I don’t think it’s anything that we haven’t experience year after year.”
He said ice season typically last 100 days from Memorial Day until Labor Day, but extreme heat does cause waves of business.

Stafstrom said the company also sells dry ice and offers individual pickups, but that’s less common.
“There are cycles of time when, you know, it’s extremely busy,” he said.
It’s not just ice companies benefiting from the heat. Companies that supply pool water, like Manchester-based Kleerwater Co., has also kept busy during this hot summer.
“Usually once you start getting some nice warm days, people start getting the itch to get their pool filled,” said driver Michael Caron, who brings trucks of waters to homes to fill pools.
Caron said the nice weather means he stays busy all day long.
“This time of the year when it’s hot and a lot of direct sun like this, we’ll be back to top off pools from the evaporation,” Caron said.
