YouTube launched the Trending page in 2015, and is now planning to retire it as people’s viewing and discovery habits have changed.

YouTube notes how it was “a lot simpler to capture [what’s trending] with a singular list of viral videos that everyone was talking about” 10 years ago. It’s at the top of the “Explore” section on the web side panel, and navigation drawer on Android and iOS.

Today, trends consist of many videos created by many fandoms, and there are more micro-trends enjoyed by diverse communities than ever before. Viewers increasingly learn about trends in different places across YouTube – from recommendations and search suggestions to Shorts, comments and Communities.

As a result, YouTube says it has “seen visits to the Trending page decrease significantly, especially over the last five years.” In the coming weeks, YouTube is removing the Trending page and Trending Now list.

YouTube Charts is becoming the intended replacement, with category-specific lists for Trending Music Videos, Weekly Top Podcast Shows, and Trending Movie Trailers, as well as the Gaming Explore page. YouTube plans to add more content categories over time.

The primary way will be personalized recommendations: “we can show a wider range of popular content that’s relevant, and it feels more natural to how viewers already find new videos.”

Viewers can still browse content that isn’t personalized in the Explore menu, on creator channels, and in their subscriptions feed.

For Creators looking to “understand what’s popular with their unique audiences,” YouTube Studio offers the “Inspiration” tab, while “Hype” is suggested as a (paid) way to “give up-and-coming creators a boost and help them get discovered.”
