Russian drones strikes struck multiple regions in Ukraine last night, officials said, as attacks continued during the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska.

“Air defense forces shot down or suppressed 61 enemy Shahed-type UAVs and decoy drones of various types over the northern and eastern regions of the country,” the Air Forces of Ukraine said in a statement today. “Confirmed strikes include missile and UAV hits: 24 drones struck 12 locations.”

It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties.

Following are reactions from world leaders on Saturday to the summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which did not resolve Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

NORWEGIAN FOREIGN MINISTER ESPEN BARTH EIDE:

“President Putin of Russia reiterated known arguments, such as emphasising the so-called ‘root causes’ of the war, which is code for the Russian justification for the illegal invasion of Ukraine. Our view is clear: it is important we must continue to put pressure on Russia, and even increase it, to give the clear signal to Russia that it must pay the price.

“We must listen to Ukraine’s wishes and needs. We know that President Putin wants to split Europe and the United States. With all our allies, we must do everything we can to avoid that. I am optimistic that we can achieve that, but we must be clear that this is a clear motivation for President Putin…

“I don’t believe it will have any effect on the battlefield right now. Too little concrete information has come out, and we see no movement at all in the Russian position.”

CZECH DEFENCE MINISTER JANA CERNOCHOVA, ON X:

“The Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska did not bring any fundamental progress towards ending the war in Ukraine, but it did confirm that Putin is not looking for peace, but an opportunity to weaken the unity of the West and spread his propaganda. He is trying to prolong the conflict in order to achieve the maximum of his goals in terms of Russian expansion. Regardless of the human casualties and the devastation of Ukrainian cities.

“The meeting was nevertheless important, among other things, because it reveals the true motives and mindset of Vladimir Putin.

“For us, it follows that it is necessary to maintain the cohesion of the West and persist in supporting Ukraine so that any agreement on a ceasefire or peace is not only based on Russian notes. This is in our vital interest.”

HUNGARIAN FOREIGN MINISTER PETER SZIJJARTO, ON X:

“The world is a safer place as long as there is US–Russia dialogue at the highest level. Credit to both presidents for making this summit happen. Today once again confirmed: the war in Ukraine will not be settled on the battlefield, but at the negotiating table. Peace can only be achieved through negotiations, dialogue, and keeping diplomatic channels open.

“Hungary has stood by this for 3.5 years, unlike Brussels and pro-war European politicians.”

President Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, both said their face-to-face summit in Anchorage, Alaska, was productive, but they made no indication that they had reached a deal to end the fighting in Ukraine.

After their meeting concluded, both leaders delivered brief remarks. They didn’t take any questions from the reporters assembled for the summit.

Putin, who spoke first, said the talks were “constructive” and held in an “atmosphere of mutual respect.” The two presidents signaled that they had reached agreement on some issues, but Trump acknowledged there was “no deal.” He provided no details on what issues had been discussed.

Earlier, the two leaders smiled and shook hands as they met on the taxiway at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Their meeting lasted about 2 ½ hours. Each leader was joined by two advisers: Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff on the U.S. side, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and foreign-policy adviser Yuri Ushakov with Putin.

The background: Trump has said he wants to end the fighting sparked by Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. He and Putin have spoken over the phone several times since the start of the U.S. president’s second term, but their relationship has soured in recent months. Trump has grown frustrated with what he sees as Putin’s reluctance to work sincerely toward ending the war.

The upshot: Neither Trump nor Putin took questions from reporters at their press conference, a sign that there was not much to discuss despite the geopolitical drama. The second of two scheduled meetings appeared to be scrapped and the joint press conference was short, with little substance.

What Trump said: After arriving back in Maryland early Saturday, Trump wrote a social-media post hailing a “great and very successful day in Alaska.” Earlier he told Fox News that he wouldn’t be imposing new sanctions on Russia for the time being.

But with no ceasefire and an invitation to Moscow, the almost three-hour meeting between the two leaders has yielded more questions than answers.

Putin welcomed back on world stage with red carpet

When President Vladimir Putin landed back onto the world stage on Friday, the skies in Alaska were cloudy. Waiting with a red carpet spread across the tarmac of the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson was US President Donald Trump.

As Putin approached, Trump clapped. The two leaders warmly shook hands and smiled.

It was a remarkable moment for Putin – a leader who most Western nations have shunned since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. His international travel has since been largely limited to nations friendly to the Russian Federation, such as North Korea and Belarus.

The fact that the Alaska summit happened at all was a victory for Putin. But this welcome would have surpassed the Kremlin’s wildest dreams. In a short six months Putin went from being a pariah in the eyes of the West to being welcomed on US soil like a partner and friend.

To cap it off, in an apparently unscripted moment, Putin decided to accept a lift to the airbase in Trump’s armoured limousine instead of driving in his own Moscow-plated presidential state car.

As the vehicle pulled away, the cameras zoomed in on Putin, sitting in the backseat and laughing.

Putin faced with questions he never gets asked

In his 25 years as Russian president, Putin has achieved complete control over the media, crushing journalistic freedoms and replacing information with propaganda. Within Russia he doesn’t often – if ever – come up against unfriendly reporters.

Yet it was only minutes after landing in Alaska that one journalist shouted in his direction: “Will you stop killing civilians?” If the question bothered him, he didn’t show it, appearing instead to shrug and diverting his gaze.

During a brief and somewhat chaotic photo op, more questions were shouted, including one in Russian about whether Putin would be ready to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky for a trilateral summit. Again, there was no obvious reaction from the Russian president beyond a cryptic smirk.

What was said when talks ended earlier than expected

The world’s media gathered in the room with Putin and Trump had been led to expect a press conference; instead, the two leaders gave statements and took no questions from reporters.

Unusually, Putin was the first to speak. He praised the “constructive atmosphere of mutual respect” of the “neighbourly” talks, and then launching into a condensed history of Alaska’s past as a Russian territory.

As Putin spoke, Trump stood in silence. It was several minutes before the Russian president mentioned what he called the “situation in Ukraine” – ostensibly the catalyst for the summit. When he did, it was to state that although an unspecified “agreement” had been reached, the “root causes” of the conflict had to be eliminated before peace could be achieved.

The phrase will have set off alarm bells in Kyiv and beyond. Since the start of the war it has become shorthand for a series of intractable and maximalist demands that Putin says stand in the way of a ceasefire.

They include recognition of Russian sovereignty over the Ukrainian regions of Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson as well as Ukraine agreeing to demilitarisation, neutrality, no foreign military involvement and new elections. Essentially, they amount to capitulation – unacceptable to Kyiv, but clearly – even after three-and-a-half years of bloody conflict – still paramount to Moscow.

With this, it was clear that there was no deal.

And what was not said

Extraordinarily – given the context and the premise for the summit – when it was Trump’s turn to speak he did not mention Ukraine or the possibility of a ceasefire once. The closest he came to referencing the conflict was saying that “five, six, seven thousand people a week” are killed and noting that Putin too wanted to see an end to the bloodshed.

The usually loquacious Trump seemed to have less to say than Putin. His statement was notable for its relative, and unusual, brevity – but primarily for its vagueness. “There were many, many points that we agreed on,” Trump said, adding that “great progress” had been made in an “extremely productive meeting”.

But he did not share any details and it did not appear that any concrete steps taken towards a resolution of the Ukrainian conflict. No major agreements or a trilateral meeting with President Zelensky were announced.

And – to Moscow’s relief – there was no mention of any “severe consequences” that Trump threatened would follow if a ceasefire wasn’t reached.

“We didn’t get there,” Trump admitted.

Then, optimistically though vaguely, he added: “But we have a very good chance of getting there.”

‘Next time in Moscow’ – Putin makes rare aside in English

The summit may have failed to yield any tangible progress towards peace in Ukraine, but it cemented the rapprochement between Russia and the US.

Pictures of the two presidents repeatedly shaking hands and grinning travelled far and wide on social media – as did images of American servicemen kneeling as they rolled out the red carpet at the foot of Putin’s plane.

Before wrapping up his statement, Putin referenced one of the US president’s frequent talking points – that the conflict in Ukraine would have never started had Trump been in power.

Despite Trump’s assertion of “great progress”, nothing of substance was unveiled at the Alaska summit – yet the two leaders left the door open for another meeting, this time on Russian soil. “I’ll probably see you again very soon,” Trump said.

Rounding off a joint statement where he had to make no promises, no concessions and no compromises, Putin may have felt at ease enough to break into English – a rare occurrence. Chuckling, he looked at Trump and said: “Next time in Moscow.”

“Oh, that’s an interesting one,” Trump said. “I’ll get a little heat on that one, but I – I could see it possibly happening.”

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin ended a three-hour summit in Alaska on Friday without announcing any agreements, leaving Trump’s call for a Ukraine ceasefire unmet.

The two leaders, meeting at Elmendorf Air Force Base, said they had made “progress” but offered no details and walked off stage without answering questions after a brief news conference, says CNN.

“There were many, many points that we agreed on – most of them, I would say,” Trump said, while noting that “a couple of big ones” remained unresolved. “There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” he added.

Trump had said in advance that he wanted a ceasefire in Ukraine to come out of the meeting. No such step was announced, and Trump indicated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would need to negotiate directly with Moscow.

The meeting included official ceremonies and protocol, but the lack of outcomes highlighted the difficulty of achieving Trump’s stated goals. Even as the summit began, Ukrainian authorities reported alerts for incoming Russian drones and aircraft.

The talks marked a high-profile encounter between the US and Russian leaders but produced no concrete agreements on security or the war in Ukraine.

Progress but not a deal

Both Trump and Putin offered a vague accounting of a meeting that stretched for hours.

“We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to,” Trump told reporters. “There are just a very few that are left. Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there. We didn’t get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there.”

In an interview immediately after the summit, Trump was asked by Fox News’ Sean Hannity about territorial concessions that would give Russia land it didn’t previously have and about potential US security assurances for Ukraine.

“Well, I think those are points that we negotiated, and those are points that we largely have agreed on,” Trump said without elaborating.

He stressed that Ukraine “has to agree to it.” Asked what his advice was for Zelensky, Trump responded: “Gotta make a deal.”

In the lead-up to the talks, it was always clearer what an unsuccessful outcome would look like than a successful one. Trump had vowed to “walk” if he didn’t like what Putin was saying, threatened to downgrade the joint news conference to a solo appearance and said “severe” consequences would come for Moscow if the war didn’t end, reports CNN.

But as he flew to Anchorage, Trump said he didn’t know what success would look like — suggesting he would recognize it when he saw it.

It turns out, success was just as hard to identify after the summit as it was when it began.

Trump says he’ll be at potential Putin-Zelensky meeting

In his Fox interview, Trump said both Putin and Zelensky want him at a potential second meeting — which he had said before the summit would be his ultimate objective.

“They both want me there, and I’ll be there,” he told Hannity.

Trump said nothing about the prospect of a trilateral meeting at the news conference, only indicating he would get on the telephone with “the various people that I think are appropriate” — including Zelensky — to update them on the talks.

But the only forthcoming meeting mentioned during Trump and Putin’s joint appearance was a potential follow-up with the Russian leader.

“We’ll speak to you very soon, and probably see you again very soon,” Trump said.

“Next time in Moscow,” Putin responded in English — a suggestion that would appear to exclude Zelensky from the discussion.

Putin back in from the cold

Soon after his arrival in the US, Putin’s grin as he peered out the window of Trump’s limousine said everything: after years of western isolation, he was back in the most powerful nation on earth, says CNN.

It had been 10 years since Putin was last in America and several more since he was welcomed to the country for a major presidential summit. After he invaded Ukraine in 2022, the Russian leader was made a pariah by many leaders, unwelcome in most western nations and even threatened with an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court. (Alaska was a desirable location for the summit, in part, because the US is not a member of the ICC.)

But Putin’s isolation ended when his plane landed in Anchorage. With a red carpet welcome, a flyover of fighter jets and a round of applause from the US president himself, the message from Trump was clear: Putin was back in from the cold. Their smiling greeting was hailed on Russian state television as a “historic handshake.”

Though Putin is still not welcome in many places in Europe, the decision to host him by Trump — who oversees the world’s largest economy and its most powerful military — does more to erode attempts at diplomatic shunning than any other leader could attempt.

That became clearer when Putin climbed into Trump’s armored vehicle, an unusual gesture that seemed to capture in an instant the Russian leader’s return to global diplomacy. Even without any major progress, it was, for him, a victory.

Aides were added to what had been billed as a one-on-one

The surprise came just as Trump was landing: No longer would he be meeting Putin one-on-one, with only their translators present. Instead, two aides would join each leader for their bilateral talks.

That was different from earlier in the week, when the White House said the summit would include a one-on-one component. A US official said it was a late change but offered no explanation for why the format shifted.

Trump’s one-on-one meetings with Putin during his first term were shrouded in a degree of mystery. With only a translator inside the room, it was often unclear what exactly was discussed. Aides sometimes had a difficult time ascertaining if the two men reached any agreements. After one such meeting, in Germany, Trump asked his interpreter to discard his notes.

The addition of two aides to Friday’s session — Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US special envoy Steve Witkoff — could allow for greater clarity in the coming days, particularly if Russia offers an accounting of events that differs from the US perspective.

Still, there was one moment that only Trump and Putin will be able to recount: their brief ride in the presidential limousine from the tarmac to the room where the meeting took place. No one else was in the car with them except Secret Service agents — no advisers or even translators.

That leaves the contents of their brief chat known only to them.
