Putin Stops in Magadan Ahead of Alaska Summit With Trump
Vladimir Putin arrives in Magadan ahead of meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. Putin will visit a fish oil processing plant and lay flowers at a memorial to the World War II-era Alaska-Siberia air route. Trump said he believes Putin intends to “make a deal” to end the war in Ukraine at the summit, and that he was planning a second meeting with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky afterward.
During what Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called a “full-fledged” working trip, Putin will visit a fish oil processing plant, inspect a sports complex and a cultural center and lay flowers at a memorial to the World War II-era Alaska-Siberia air route, a symbol of Soviet-American wartime cooperation.
He is also scheduled to hold a meeting with regional Governor Sergei Nosov.
Putin and Trump are set to meet at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, starting at 10:30 p.m. Moscow time (11:30 a.m. local), in talks aimed at ending Russia’s more-than-three-year war on Ukraine.
The Russian delegation includes presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and special economic envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
Three Russian government aircraft have already landed in Alaska, including an Il-96 with tail number RA-96023 — a plane that became notorious in 2018 when Argentine authorities discovered nearly 400 kilograms of cocaine at the Russian embassy compound in Buenos Aires.
The aircraft used in the drug trafficking operation between Argentina, Russia and Germany, shown in footage released by Argentine law enforcement, was identified as a Russian diplomatic plane at the time.
Trump said he believes Putin intends to “make a deal” to end the war in Ukraine at the summit, and that he was planning a second meeting with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky afterward.
“I believe now he’s convinced that he’s going to make a deal. He’s going to make a deal. I think he’s going to. And we’re going to find out — I’m going to know very quickly,” Trump said during an appearance on Fox Radio’s “The Brian Kilmeade Show” Thursday morning.
If the meeting doesn’t end well, “I’ll just have a press conference and head out. I’ll head back to Washington,” he said.
Putin makes stop on way to Alaska, Peskov reveals details
Vladimir Putin arrived in Magadan for a regional visit. After the stop, he will head to Alaska to take part in the summit with US President Donald Trump. The talks will focus on a ceasefire at the front and the possibility of ending the war between Ukraine and Russia. Trump estimated the likelihood of unsuccessful talks with Putin at 25%. If the negotiations fail, the United States is prepared to impose sanctions on Russia.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian president will visit an industrial enterprise and meet with Magadan region governor Sergey Nosov.
“Heading to the northeast, Putin has never missed an opportunity to deal with regional matters, and this time was no different,” Peskov said.
After the regional visit, the Kremlin leader will travel to Alaska to take part in the summit with US President Donald Trump.
Delegates and media already arrived
According to Flightradar24, an Il-96-300 aircraft of the Rossiya special flight detachment arrived at Anchorage Airport in Alaska from Vnukovo Airport.
Russian media specified that the plane carried journalists from the Kremlin press pool.
Later, another Il-96-300 from Vnukovo arrived in Anchorage. According to Russian media reports, the aircraft likely brought Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russia’s Ambassador to the US Aleksandr Darchiyev for the meeting.
Trump–Putin summit in Alaska
On August 15, in Anchorage, Alaska, US President Donald Trump will meet with Vladimir Putin.
The talks will focus on a ceasefire at the front and the possibility of ending the war between Ukraine and Russia.
Ahead of the summit, the Kremlin declared its commitment to a diplomatic settlement of the war and accused Ukraine of being unwilling to engage in dialogue.
Peskov also stated that Trump and Putin do not plan to sign any documents following the meeting.
